How the Construction Payslip Generator Works

Follow these six steps to generate a Building Award–compliant payslip for any Australian construction worker. Each field maps directly to the requirements in Fair Work Regulations 2009 (Reg 3.46) and the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020.

  1. Enter employer and site details

Add your business name and ABN — both mandatory under Fair Work Regulations 2009, Reg 3.46. Include the project or site name if relevant for your records.

  2. Select construction classification

Choose the employee's CW/ECW classification level (e.g. CW3 — Carpenter) or apprentice year. The classification determines the minimum hourly rate under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020.

  3. Add all allowances as separate line items

Enter each applicable allowance separately: site allowance, travel/fares allowance, tool allowance, meal allowance, and any wet weather allowance. Each must appear as an identified line item on the payslip.

  4. Enter overtime and penalty rates

Add any overtime hours (weekday time-and-a-half for first 2 hours, then double time). Add Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday penalty rates as separate line items if applicable.

  5. Review deductions and superannuation

Enter PAYG tax withheld and superannuation at 12% (from 1 July 2025). Include the super fund name — typically Cbus Super for construction workers.

  6. Preview and download

Review the live payslip preview for accuracy. Download a print-ready, Building Award–compliant PDF from $4.99 — no account or subscription required.

Building and Construction Award 2026 Explained

Construction payslips in Australia are governed by the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 (MA000020), a Modern Award under the Fair Work Act 2009. This Award covers workers involved in residential, commercial, and civil construction — including carpenters, electricians, plumbers, concreters, labourers, and apprentices working on-site.

Under this Award, payslips must include the employee's CW/ECW classification level (e.g. CW3 — Carpenter), the applicable hourly rate for that level, and every allowance as a separate, named line item. Bundling allowances into the base rate — a common payroll error — is non-compliant and can constitute underpayment.

Many construction workers are also covered by CFMEU enterprise agreements (EBAs), which set rates abovethe Award minimum. On major projects, EBA rates and allowances can significantly exceed the Award. If your workers are covered by an EBA, use that agreement's rates rather than the Award minimums shown below. Always verify at fairwork.gov.au/find-my-award.

The Fair Work Ombudsman actively audits construction employers. Penalties for payslip non-compliance are up to $16,500 per contravention for individuals and $82,500 for a body corporate.

Common Construction Allowances on Australian Payslips

The Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 mandates that all allowances appear as separate, identified line items on the payslip — not bundled into the base rate. The table below shows the most common allowances and their indicative rates for FY2025–26.

Note: CFMEU enterprise agreements on major projects may include additional allowances not listed here, such as height allowances, confined space allowances, dirty work allowances, and productivity bonuses. Always refer to the specific EBA for your project.

Site Allowance vs Travel Allowance — What Goes on a Construction Payslip?

🏗️ Site Allowance (Industry Allowance)

The site allowance (also called the industry allowance or project allowance) compensates workers for the specific disabilities and discomforts of on-site construction work — including exposure to weather, the temporary nature of employment, and site-specific conditions.

Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, the base site allowance is approximately $5.25 per hour for all ordinary hours worked on a construction site. On major projects under CFMEU enterprise agreements, this allowance is negotiated separately and can be significantly higher.

Payslip rule: Must appear as a separate, named line item — never bundled into the base hourly rate.

🚗 Travel Allowance (Fares Allowance)

The travel allowance(sometimes called the fares allowance) compensates workers for the cost of travelling to and from the construction site each day. Unlike a vehicle reimbursement, this is a flat daily allowance based on the distance from the worker's home to the site.

Under the Award, the standard daily travel allowance is approximately $21.90 per day. For travel exceeding 50 km, higher rates apply. Workers who must relocate overnight may also be entitled to a Living Away from Home Allowance (LAFHA), which is typically tax-exempt up to ATO limits.

Payslip rule: Must appear separately — distinct from the site allowance and base rate.

Construction Overtime and Penalty Rates on Australian Payslips

Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, overtime and penalty rates must appear as separate line items on every construction payslip. The table below shows the applicable rates. Example amounts are based on a CW3 (Carpenter) at the indicative FY2025–26 rate of $31.02/hr.

⚠️ Rates are indicative under the Building Award 2020. EBA rates may differ. Always verify at fairwork.gov.au.

Apprentice Construction Payslip — Year 1–4 Rates

Apprentice construction workers are paid a percentage of the relevant CW3 tradesperson rate, increasing with each year of apprenticeship. Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, the rates below apply (based on indicative CW3 rate of $31.02/hr for FY2025–26). Apprentices are entitled to a tool allowance and travel allowance, but the site allowance may be reduced for apprentices in their first two years.

Construction Payslip Requirements Under Fair Work

📋 What the Award Requires

The Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 requires payslips to show the employee's CW/ECW classification, all allowances as separate line items, and overtime at the correct penalty rates. Failure to itemise allowances constitutes a breach of the Award and potentially an underpayment.

⏱️ Timing

Payslips must be issued within one working day of each pay day under s536 of the Fair Work Act 2009 — even if the worker is on sick leave or annual leave. Weekly, fortnightly, and monthly pay cycles all apply.

💰 Superannuation Disclosure

The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025 (up from 11.5% in FY2024–25). Construction workers are typically Cbus Super members. The dollar amount and fund name must appear on every payslip — failure to disclose is a separate ATO breach.

🔍 Fair Work Audits

The Fair Work Ombudsman specifically targets construction employers in compliance audits, particularly around allowance itemisation, overtime calculations, and super contributions. Non-compliant payslips can result in penalties of up to $16,500 per contravention.

Construction Payslip Compliance: Fair Work Act Requirements

Under the Fair Work Act 2009 (s536) and the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, all construction employers in Australia must provide compliant payslips to every employee. Non-compliance — including missing allowances, incorrect overtime calculations, or undisclosed super — can result in penalties of up to $16,500 per contravention for individuals and $82,500 for a body corporate.

Timing

Construction payslips must be issued within one working day of each pay day under s536 of the Fair Work Act 2009 — even if the employee is on annual or sick leave.

Allowances

Every allowance (site, travel, tool, meal, wet weather) must appear as a separate, identified line item under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020. Bundling allowances into the base rate is non-compliant.

Penalties

Failing to provide a compliant payslip can result in civil penalties of up to $16,500 per contravention for an individual and $82,500 for a body corporate. The Fair Work Ombudsman actively audits construction employers.

Superannuation

The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025. Construction workers are typically Cbus members. The dollar amount and fund name must appear on every payslip — failure to disclose is a separate ATO compliance breach.

Construction Payslip Generator — Common Questions

What award covers construction workers in Australia?

Most on-site construction workers in Australia are covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 (MA000020), which is a Modern Award under the Fair Work Act 2009. This award sets minimum rates of pay, allowances, overtime, and penalty rates for tradies, labourers, and apprentices working on building and construction sites. Some workers are covered by enterprise agreements or CFMEU (Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union) collective agreements, which typically set rates above the Award minimum.

What allowances must appear on a construction payslip in Australia?

Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, all applicable allowances must appear as separate line items on the payslip. Common construction allowances include: site allowance (varies by project value), travel allowance or fares allowance, tool allowance (for tradies supplying their own tools), meal allowance (when overtime exceeds 1.5 hours), and wet weather allowance. The dollar amount for each allowance must be shown separately — you cannot lump allowances into the base rate.

What are the overtime rates for construction workers?

Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, overtime for full-time construction employees is: time and a half (150%) for the first 2 hours of overtime on a weekday; double time (200%) for all overtime thereafter. On Saturdays, the first 2 hours are at 150% and the rest at 200%. On Sundays, all time is at 200%. On public holidays, the rate is typically double time and a half (250%). All overtime and penalty rates must appear as separate line items on the payslip.

What is the site allowance on a construction payslip?

The site allowance (also called the "industry allowance" or "project allowance") is a flat allowance paid to construction workers for the general nature of working on a building site — including disability, climatic conditions, and the transient nature of the work. Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, the base industry allowance is $5.25 per hour (indicative rate — verify at fairwork.gov.au). For major projects under enterprise agreements, the site allowance may be significantly higher and is negotiated separately.

What is the travel allowance for construction workers?

The travel (fares) allowance under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 compensates workers for travelling to a job site. The allowance is based on the distance from the worker's home to the worksite. For workers travelling more than 50 km, specific daily travel allowances apply. For workers who must be away from home overnight, a living away from home allowance (LAFHA) may also apply. These are typically tax-exempt up to ATO limits. Both must be shown separately on the payslip.

What super fund do construction workers use?

Most construction workers in Australia are members of Cbus Super (Construction and Building Unions Superannuation fund), which is the industry super fund for the construction sector. The mandatory super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025. Both the dollar contribution amount and the fund name (e.g. "Cbus Super") must appear on every payslip. Some enterprise agreements specify Cbus as the default fund, and employees may only change funds if permitted under the relevant agreement.

How do CFMEU rates differ from the Award minimum?

CFMEU (Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union) enterprise agreements — negotiated for specific projects or employers — typically pay rates well above the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 minimum. On major infrastructure and civil projects, CFMEU EBA rates can be 20–50% above Award minimums, and additional allowances (e.g. productivity bonuses, height allowances, confined space allowances) may apply. Payslips under a CFMEU EBA must clearly show all applicable rates and allowances. Always check your specific enterprise agreement for the correct rates.

What payslip information is mandatory for construction workers?

Under the Fair Work Act 2009 (s536) and Fair Work Regulations 2009 (Reg 3.46), a compliant construction payslip must include: employer name and ABN, employee full name, date of payment, pay period start and end dates, gross pay, net pay, PAYG tax withheld, superannuation contributions with fund name, hourly rate of pay, classification level (e.g. CW3 Carpenter), and all allowances (site, travel, tool, meal) as separate line items. Overtime, penalty rates, and any deductions must also appear separately.

How are apprentice construction workers paid on their payslip?

Apprentice construction workers are paid a percentage of the relevant tradesperson rate, based on their year of apprenticeship. Under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, apprentices in Year 1 receive approximately 50% of the tradesperson rate, rising to 87.5% in Year 4. Apprentices are also entitled to tool allowances and travel allowances but the site allowance may be reduced. Payslips for apprentices must clearly show the applicable apprentice year, the percentage rate applied, and all allowances as separate line items.

Can I use this generator for casual construction workers?

Yes. OfficeDraft supports casual, full-time, part-time, and apprentice construction workers across all Australian states. Casual construction workers under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 receive a 25% casual loading on top of the ordinary rate. This loading must appear as a separate line item on the payslip. The tool is fully customisable so you can add all relevant allowances and penalty rates.
