This generates an earnings/income statement for a freelancer or sole trader. It is not a legal employee payslip, and should be labelled and used as an income summary.
A freelancer payslip generator is what most people search for when they actually need a formatted summary of freelance income — not a payslip in the legal sense, since most freelancers aren't employees of the people who pay them. Officedraft's tool produces a clear, period-by-period income summary for ABN freelancers and sole traders, built from your actual invoices and payments, formatted the way a lender, agent, or visa assessor expects to see freelance income presented. DO FREELANCERS RECEIVE PAYSLIPS?
Generally, no. A payslip is a document an employer is legally required to give an employee under the Fair Work Act 2009. A freelancer working under an ABN is running their own business and invoicing clients — the client is not their employer, so there's no payslip obligation. The Fair Work Ombudsman's guidance on independent contractors sets out the factors — control over hours, who supplies equipment, ability to subcontract, working for multiple clients — that distinguish a genuine freelancer from an employee who has simply been labelled a contractor.
There is one common exception. A freelancer who operates through their own company and pays themselves a regular wage as a PAYG employee of that company is, in that specific role, an employee — and a genuine payslip from the company's payroll process is appropriate. This is different from a sole trader ABN freelancer, who has no payroll relationship with themselves or their clients at all.
PAYSLIP VS INVOICE
An invoice and a payslip look superficially similar — both list an amount and a date — but they serve opposite purposes and come from different sides of the relationship.
| Field | Employee Payslip | Freelancer Invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | Employer, to an employee | Freelancer, to a client |
| Confirms payment received? | Yes — records an actual payment | No — it is a request for payment |
| Shows PAYG tax withheld | Yes, mandatory field | No — freelancers pay their own tax |
| Shows superannuation | Yes, mandatory field | Generally no, unless contractually agreed |
| Legal basis | Fair Work Act 2009, s536 | Contract / agreement with the client |
| Shows GST | Not applicable | Yes, if GST-registered |
PAYSLIP VS INCOME STATEMENT
An income statement, sometimes called an earnings statement, is the document that actually fills the role a payslip plays for an employee — but it comes from a different source and carries different weight with a lender or agent.
| Field | Employee Payslip | Freelancer Income Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Employer's payroll system | Freelancer's own invoices and bank records |
| Covers | A single, fixed pay period | Any period you choose — weekly, monthly, annual |
| Independently verifiable? | Yes, employer can confirm it | Only alongside invoices, BAS, or tax records |
| Typical use | Standard employee proof of income | Self-employed proof of income, supplementary document |
| Who accepts it alone | Most lenders and agents | Some lenders, usually with supporting documents |
Because an income statement is self-prepared rather than issued by an independent third party, it carries less weight on its own than a genuine employee payslip. That is exactly why it needs to be backed by invoices, bank statements, and ATO records rather than presented alone.
INCOME PROOF FOR FREELANCERS
Because freelance income doesn't come with a payslip, lenders and agents rely on a combination of documents to build a picture of genuine earnings. The strongest combination is usually a Notice of Assessment or tax return for the past one to two years, Business Activity Statements if GST-registered, six to twelve months of business bank statements, and a summary income statement showing gross earnings by period.
A freelancer needs an ABN to invoice clients without tax being withheld at the top marginal rate, and must register for GST once turnover passes $75,000 in a 12-month period. Both of these are checkable — an ABN can be searched on the Australian Business Register, which is one reason lenders ask for it on any income document.

USE CASES
Freelance developers and designers invoicing multiple clients can summarise income across projects into one document for a loan or visa application.
Project-based income with irregular payment timing benefits from a clear period-by-period earnings summary rather than a single invoice.
Mixed one-off and retainer income can be consolidated into a single statement showing total earnings for a defined period.
Recurring retainer clients plus occasional project work can both be reflected in one earnings summary, broken down by source if needed.
Rideshare, delivery and platform-based freelancers with variable weekly income often need a longer earnings history rather than a single pay record.
Any ABN sole trader — not just creative freelancers — can use the same income summary format for a bank, rental, or visa application.
WORKED EXAMPLES
The examples below show how income from several clients, paid at different times, is consolidated into a single six-month earnings summary.
Freelance Graphic Designer
Jan – Jun 2026 (6 months) · Not registered for GST
Freelance Web Developer
Jul – Dec 2025 (6 months) · GST-registered — figures shown exclude GST
These are illustrative examples only. A real income statement should be built from your actual invoices and bank deposits for the exact period requested.
COMMON DOCUMENTATION MISTAKES
Labelling the document a 'payslip'
Calling a self-generated income summary a payslip when no employer relationship exists misrepresents what the document is. Label it an earnings statement or income summary instead — this is more accurate and, in practice, more likely to be accepted.
Using invoice totals instead of amounts actually received
An invoice shows what was billed, not what was paid. If a client pays late or partially, an income summary based on invoiced totals rather than bank deposits won't match your bank statements.
Leaving out GST
If you're GST-registered, the GST component of your invoices is not part of your actual income — it's collected on behalf of the ATO. An income statement that includes GST in the gross income figure overstates real earnings.
No supporting documents
A single generated statement with nothing behind it is weak evidence. Lenders and agents expect to see it supported by invoices, bank statements, BAS lodgements, or a Notice of Assessment.
Inconsistent figures across documents
If the income shown on a self-prepared statement is higher than what appears on your tax return or BAS for the same period, that mismatch is one of the first things a lender will flag.
Treating a client relationship as employment without checking
If a client controls your hours, provides your equipment, and you work solely for them, the relationship may legally be employment regardless of what either party calls it — which changes what documentation is appropriate.
LEGAL CONTEXT
A freelancer's tax and income obligations sit with the Australian Taxation Office, not the Fair Work system that governs employee payslips. Under ATO record-keeping rules, income and expense records generally need to be kept for five years, and GST-registered freelancers must lodge Business Activity Statements reflecting actual invoiced and collected GST. None of this requires or produces a payslip — it produces tax returns, BAS lodgements, and business records, which is why those are the documents lenders trust most.
⚠️ This tool produces a self-prepared income summary for documenting genuine freelance earnings. It is not a substitute for a tax return, BAS lodgement, or ATO income statement, and should not be labelled or presented as an employee payslip. This page is general information only, not tax or legal advice — for guidance specific to your situation, consult a registered tax agent or BAS agent.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Generally, no. A payslip is a document an employer is required to issue to an employee under the Fair Work Act 2009. A freelancer operating as a sole trader with an ABN is not an employee of their clients, so clients don't issue payslips — they pay invoices. The exception is a freelancer who operates through their own company and pays themselves a wage as a PAYG employee of that company; in that specific case, a genuine payslip is appropriate and should come from the company's own payroll process.
Ask what they actually need it for. Lenders and agents usually accept an income summary or earnings statement backed by invoices, bank statements, and a Notice of Assessment or recent tax return instead of a payslip, since they understand freelancers are self-employed. Clarifying this upfront avoids sending the wrong document and having it rejected.
A payslip is issued by an employer to an employee for a specific pay period and shows PAYG tax withheld and superannuation. An invoice is issued by a freelancer to a client requesting payment for work — it doesn't confirm the payment was received. An income statement or earnings statement summarises income actually received over a period, drawing on paid invoices and bank deposits, and is the closest document a freelancer has to a payslip.
The most persuasive combination is usually two years of tax returns and Notices of Assessment, recent Business Activity Statements if registered for GST, six to twelve months of business bank statements, and a summary income statement showing gross earnings by period. A single freelancer earnings statement on its own is rarely enough — lenders and agents want to see it supported by independently verifiable records.
You generally need an ABN once you're carrying on a business rather than doing occasional one-off work, and most clients will ask for one before paying an invoice, since without it they may be required to withhold tax at the top marginal rate. Registration is free through the Australian Business Register.
GST registration is compulsory once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 in a 12-month period, and optional below that threshold. Once registered, invoices must show GST separately, and this should also be reflected as its own line on any income summary you produce.
At minimum: copies of every invoice issued, records of payments actually received, business bank statements, receipts for deductible expenses, and BAS lodgements if registered for GST. The Australian Taxation Office requires these records to be kept for five years and they are also what lenders and agents will cross-check against any income summary you provide.
Yes, provided every figure reflects income genuinely invoiced and received. This tool produces a formatted income summary, not a legal payslip, and it should be presented as such — labelled as an earnings or income statement rather than a payslip — and supported by the invoices and bank records it's drawn from.
In practice the terms overlap. Both describe someone running their own business and invoicing clients rather than being on the client's payroll. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets out the legal factors that distinguish a genuine independent contractor from an employee, which matters because a business that treats someone as a contractor when they are legally an employee can be liable for unpaid entitlements.
That can be a sign the working relationship looks more like employment than genuine freelancing under Fair Work tests, regardless of what either party calls it. It's worth checking the actual factors — control over hours, ability to subcontract, provision of your own equipment, working for multiple clients — against the Fair Work Ombudsman's guidance on contractors versus employees.
