What Is a Full and Final Settlement Letter?
A Full and Final Settlement (FnF) letter is the document that closes out an employee's financial relationship with an employer at the end of employment. It lists every amount the employee is owed — and any amount the employee owes the company — and arrives at one final net figure.
- •Employees need it as proof of what they were paid (or are owed) on exit, often required for new employer background checks or loan applications.
- •HR teams need it to formally close the payroll record and avoid future disputes about what was settled.
- •Both sides need it as the reference document if a dispute later goes to the Labour Commissioner or Labour Court.
You typically need an FnF letter when you resign, are terminated, complete a fixed-term contract, or retire — any event that ends the employment relationship and triggers a final payout.
